Napoleon’s brutal army has begun invading Spain. Only Cádiz remains free. Rafael, a guerrilla fighter, is captured. Gustavo, the French army captain who once knew him, inquires about Lola the coal girl. She is still alive and works as a singer in a bar in Cádiz. Gustavo releases Rafael, asking him to send a message to Cádiz. They are long term rivals for Lola’s affection. The city is preparing for war, far outnumbered. Life continues in the flamenco bar and the city’s market as the French prepare to invade. Gustavo surrenders in order to speak with the Spanish leaders. Blindfolded, he is mockingly serenaded by Lola, who does not notice his true identity, though he recognizes her voice. After sending the message that Cádiz must surrender, he is released back to his French soldiers. The Spanish leaders recruit civilian volunteers to defend their city. The mood at the bar becomes somber as a battle looms, but Lola sings anyway. Gustavo is aided by a military officer who betrays his fellow Spaniards, but Gustavo is shot. The traitor hides the injured Gustavo. Gustavo finds his way to Lola’s bedroom, where she discovers her old love. She and a coworker, Rosarillo, work to dress his wounds as the Spanish traitor makes his way in. The latter knows that Gustavo is there, and his duplicitous nature with Lola affords him the chance to talk to the hurt captain. Alone with his former lover, Gustavo kisses Lola. At that very moment, her Spanish love interest Rafael enters the room. He’s jealous, but as a favor to Lola he agrees to help his rival out of the city walls. This irritates the Spanish traitor, who later proposes that Lola leave the city to carry a message to a general in the Spanish army. She is captured by the French, reunited with her love, and then sent away to meet the Spanish general as originally intended. The highest officer of the French army discovers that his captain and Lola are in love, and sends Gustavo along with Lola on her mission. Along the way, they are welcomed by an encampment of gypsies. Gustavo asks Lola to run away with him and leave both their countries, but she says no. The next scene is a lengthy straight-up fantasy performance piece with Rafael (played by the real-life Spanish flamenco star Rafael de Córdoba) dancing with a woman (presumably, Lola’s character, since the actress playing Lola herself, Rocío Jurado, could not dance flamenco), and then having a dance-off with a French soldier (presumably, Gustavo's character, since that actor also could not himself dance flamenco). The movie resumes, with Lola leaving the gypsy encampment during the night, torn between her love for Gustavo and her love for her own country. Unfortunately, the French general had not trusted his captain, for there are French soldiers close by, and they follow her to where she was going and then kill some Spanish loyalists. Lola is taken captive to the French general. Then, she is shown that the precious message she was supposedly carrying to the Spanish general was nothing but a blank piece of paper. She is marched to her beloved bay, where the French soldiers execute her on the beach.

This clip features some of Soledad's scenes from Lola la piconera. Soledad plays Rosarillo, a sympathetic gypsy whose husband earns bread "by the sweat of his forehead." She sings several songs; click here, here, and here to see those videos. This movie can be ordered in the store.
