An unmarried woman, Piperkarcka, is pregnant. An older woman, Mrs. John, who lives with her clueless husband, and who just lost her own baby, proposes to pretend the child is her own, giving the mother money. A theologian, Eric, son of a pastor, comes to the theatre building to ask the director, Hassenrevter, if he can become an actor. He confesses to Hassenrevter's daughter Walburga his inner torment about wanting to change careers. The baby’s mother, full of regret, tries to get her baby back, but Mrs. John refuses to let her see her baby. Hassenrevter suspects Walburga and Eric are in love, and is unhappy about that. Two women, one of which is Piperkarcka, arrive at the building with a baby. An inspector tries to find out the identity of the baby and who its true mother is. Suddenly, in the arms of the woman, the baby dies. Once alone, Walburga and Eric reveal their love. Mrs. John's brother, Bruno, is a crazy man. She asked him to warn Piperkarcka never to return. Instead, he clumsily killed her. Filled with guilt, Mrs. John deteriorates into insanity. Hassenrevter reveals he has been appointed as a theatre director in Strasbourg. Having read in the newspaper that a baby was born in his building, he tells Mrs. John of the baby’s death there. She insists she is the child’s mother, and Walburga confesses that she saw Piperkarcka in the building the day Mrs. John decided to buy it. Another baby is revealed from a back room of the building. Everyone sympathizes with the newly orphaned boy. Mrs. John runs outside and it is revealed that she killed herself in the street.
